Was overcoming your fear of speaking easy?

Yes and no. At the time I would have said no, it was definitely not easy, simply because I was in the moment and my fear consumed me. Looking back now, I would say it was easier than I expected. With the right tools and support, my fear of speaking died quite quickly and I was able to focus on managing my nerves and developing my skills.

What is your number 1 tip to overcome the fear of speaking?

My number 1 tips to overcome your fear of speaking is, you have to speak and you have to speak often. Speaking doesn’t have to be on stage, it could be speaking to the person serving you in a shop, it could be making conversation with someone in the lift at work. Challenge yourself to speak to 1 new person a day. The more you do it the easier it will be.

What can I do to calm my nerves before I give my speech?

Shut your eyes and take 3 deep breaths. I like to add an affirmation like “My speech is a gift and the audience is ready to receive it with an open mind and heart. I love what I do!”

What is the 1st step to preparing a speech?

The first step to preparing a speech is to define your overall message. What is it that you want the audience to leave with? This is most important step in speech preparation, if you get this wrong, you will struggle with your speech preparation.

Do you still get nervous when speaking?

Yes, I do. My nervousness now comes from caring about the audience and wanting them to gain value from my presentation. I now embrace that nervous feeling as it gets my adrenaline pumping before I go on stage. The day I am not nervous will be the day I stop speaking.

Why should I bust my fear of public speaking?

First, take a moment to reflect on the impact of not taking action to face your fear of public speaking:

  • Fear will continue to consume you.
  • Your anxiety and nervousness will continue to surface when you speak.
  • Your fear will hold you back.
